2017 NUBS China Career Talk was held in the Lord Dearing Building last week, attracting estimated 500 students to sign up for the event. Five professor speakers and NUBS faculty members shared their experience in various industries with students. Now let’s have a brief review about the Career Talk event.

Prof. Martin Lockett

At the beginning of the event, Professor Martin Lockett presented a welcoming speech. He raised some critical changes in today and future workplace: 1. Career plan may not work for some of the future jobs. 2. One may have to stay in one company for a longer period. 3. One’s career will be longer due to the postponing of retirement.

Professor Lockett has worked in various fields and have collected multiple managerial experience in different industries. Among his rich experience, he selected the retail and consulting industry as an example to share with students. In the retail industry, to face the ever-changing situation, employees will have different roles to play. This means that you need to keep abreast of the changes around you, adapt accordingly, and maintain your learning ability. In addition, the retail industry places great emphasis on detail management. At the same time, it is a high-pressure industry that has high requirements on interpersonal skills. Doing business in retailing can bring you many things: getting experience in detail management, learning how to deal and negotiate with people and distribute work properly.

Professor Lockett pointed out that there are three types of consulting jobs: Strategic Consulting (requires extensive data processing and analysis skills), Business Consulting (focusing on one field or multiple fields of business analysis), and IT Consulting (developing large IT systems). An excellent consultant has sharp mind. Moreover, to do the work well, one needs to have superior data analysis ability, critical thinking and inductive ability.

In conclusion, Professor Lockett gave students three suggestions: 1.know what you want. 2. Prepare to start in frontlines. 3. Remember who is paying your salary: always think about customers.

Prof. Martin Liu

Professor Martin Liu shared his career path with students. He went to Canada in 1993 for study, just like many other students, he took odd jobs for living. After graduation, he found a job in P&G, and later worked in big companies such as Unison. He had also co-founded several firms himself.

Professor Liu pointed out that the benefits of working in big companies include systematic learning environments, accesses to high profile people and good compensations and benefits; however, every job has its shortcomings. Professor Liu was frequently on business trips, and the working environment of big companies was actually not as nice as he imagined. Gradually, Professor Liu found it hard to keep a balance between work and personal life. As a result, he resigned from his job. While pursuing his PhD with a scholarship in the U.K., ProfessorLiu found that working in the academic field is most suitable forhim. based on his personal experiences, Professor Liu gave students the following suggestions: 1.Don‘t idealize your future career; 2. Seize every opportunity to learn; 3.Don’t choose career based on how much you will make; 4. There is no perfect job.

Dr. Lei Li

Dr. Lei Li started his speech by a question, why are you here? He then explained the different definitions of success using the examples of Jerry Yang, Jack Ma, and Huang Dafa.Hebelieved that success is in one’s own hand and may not come atonce. You may need to encounter multiple obstacles. However, passionand persistence can eventually take you toward the success. Dr. Lialso emphasized that one shall measures success by looking at whatimpact he/she has made on other people.

Dr. Lei Li then talked about goals. He believes it is not right for students to have similar goals or plans. Everyone should have his/her own direction. In addition, Dr. Li highlighted the importance of internships. It would be a good idea to have some work experience by having an internship before studying abroad. In conclusion, Dr. Li suggested students to get to know about themselves and their environments, and see learning as a lifelong process.

Dr. Dirk Moosmayer

What is your goal?According to Dr. Moosmayer, there are external and internal goals. External goal relates to what you want. Internal goals refers to what you need. When you get an internship or job, it is important to consider what your employer needs and what you need. It will be an advantage for you if you know what you truly want. It is also essential for you to stay curious, even if there are few new things to be discovered at your work. Learning is a lifelong process. In college, professors do not only teach about economics, but also look at ethics and other aspects of knowledge. Remember, never set boundaries for your career and choose the path that you are truly interested in.

Afterthe individual sharing, Dr. Xuan Feng hosted the panel discussion.Questions which students are most interested in were discussed.

1. Start a business yourself VS. Find a job

Professors suggested that setting up one's own business requires a great deal of knowledge and experience, which most undergraduate students are lacking. However, everyone comes from different backgrouds, and some students may already have a deep understanding of a certain area. Therefore, whether to start a business or not should vary from person to person. Furthermore, no matter what one does, it is always good to develop one’s entrepreneurship spirit.

2. Master Degree VS. First Job

In general, there are advantages and disadvantages to both options. Going to graduate school may cause financial stress and will take 1-2 years. The difference between the salary of a postgraduate student and the salary of an undergraduate student whohas good work experience is very little. Undergraduates are sometimes even more competitive in the job market. Given the competitive job market in China, professors believe that graduate schools should focus on helping students get work experiences. Students should consider applying for a master program that includes internship opportunities. For example, Master of Professional Accounting program in UNNC has combined degree study with work practice in one programme, enabling students to obtain a degree and at the same time gain work experience.
